Mayor Sanabria was elected to the City of Huntington Park’s City Council on March 3, 2015 and re-elected to serve a second term on March 3, 2020. She has served as a Director for the Independent Cities Association, the Independent Cities Finance Authority Board of Directors, and the Los Angeles County Library District. She is also a member of the Central Basin Water Association, Los Angeles Vector Control District and the 1-710 EIR/EIS Project Committee.
She was selected by her peers at the June 13 Council meeting to serve as Mayor. She served as Mayor for the 2017-2018 term. She was elected by her peers to serve as a Vice Mayor for a second time during the July 22, 2022 reorganization. A proud product of Huntington Park, Marilyn Sanabria grew up in this community, attended local schools, and graduated from Huntington Park High School. As a child, her mother emphasized the importance of giving and contributing to society, values she carries with her today as she serves on Council.
She became the first member in her family to graduate from college, when she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from California State University, Long Beach.
After college, Mayor Sanabria took a fellowship with the Los Angeles Superior Court, where she helped individuals and families understand the legal system. This work inspired her to continue working to improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable. Since then she has dedicated her career to assisting homeless individuals and families by connecting them with essential resources and permanent housing. Her professional background in the legal field has provided her with the expertise to understand, educate, and empower the community members of Huntington Park.
As a Council Member, Ms. Sanabria’s main focus is on balancing the budget and creating new development in the City. She sees opportunity for change and through her initiatives, she hopes to help move Huntington Park forward.
During her spare time, Mayor Sanabria enjoys watching movies and spending time with her family.
